JOB TITLE: Director of External Affairs

DEPARTMENT: Executive

REPORTS TO: Chief Executive Officer (Interim)

FLSA STATUS: Full-time, Exempt, Salary

JOB SUMMARY:

The Director of External Affairs is part of a tri-county agency and serves as the Inland Empire’s leadership position reporting to the CEO who leads initiatives that build and execute brand, strengthen external communications, foster strategic partnerships, and expand relationships with policy makers, municipalities, industry leaders, and other influencers and stakeholders. This position serves on the executive leadership team supporting the strategic direction of the organization and is critical to diversifying and sustaining philanthropic and government support and developing and maintaining relationship with local constituents.

The Director of External Affairs is responsible for overseeing and implementing the Riverside and San Bernardino Office’s fund development strategy through the creation of meaningful and impactful major gifts and government stewardship. This person also oversees events and partnerships that garner press and brand awareness, foster of strong community relations, increase revenue, solidify donor loyalty, and acquire new supporters. The Director of External Affairs demonstrates a collaborative and results-oriented approach to lead and drive the production of collaborative funded partnership and programmatic giving that advance our new strategic plan, donor involvement, core values, and JEDI framework.

This position has growth potential to serve as a tri-county Vice President for advancing advocacy initiatives across Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties.

The positions has three central areas of focus:
Financial Management and Revenue Development within the Inland Empire
• Leadership, Business Operations and Regional Board Engagement 
Expanding and maintaining Partnerships


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial Management & Revenue Development within the Inland Empire
Maintain, deepen, and grow current municipality funding levels.
Develop, implement, lead, and measure strategically guided plans to sustain and increase revenue in the Riverside Office through government, foundations, and major giving.
Maintain and grow major gifts and planned giving efforts.
Proactively ensure that the organization develops strong long-term relationships with large scale individual, foundation, and corporate donors/funders.
Communicate coordination, integration, and reporting on resource development activities and strategies with the CEO and Fund Development Team.
Play a key role in developing marketing messages with the Marketing Team for campaign materials (government, event, program) for effectively communicating calls to action through printed materials, website, media relations, social networking, and other emerging technologies to advance the Inland Empire office.
Serves as a member to the tri-county fund development team and collaborates locally with office development team members.
Collaborate with the Fund Development team for quality and accurate donor data.

Responsible for evaluating and monitoring trends, metrics, and dashboards.
Responsible for the assignment, monitoring, and successful completion of revenue activities. 

Develop revenue goals and budgets and oversees financial reporting to internal departments and external agencies.
Collaborate with COO on strategy and execution for various program events, key partnerships, and deliverables.
Collaborate with IE Office’s Director of Resource Development and Events on local donor stewardship and partners.
Supportive arm for all IE Office fundraising events led by Director of Resource Development and Events

Leadership, Business Operations, & Regional Board Engagement 
The Director of External Affairs is a key position within BBBSOCIE Agency Leadership. The Director of External Affairs is a member of the BBBSOCIE fund development team and will work closely with the following entities: Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, BBBSOCIE Finance team on reporting and accounts, and BBBSOCIE Marketing team. 
Participate in the strategic planning and implementation to accomplish BBBSOCIE’s mission. Specifically, drives the guidance and implementation for revenue and governmental relationships.
Employ a broad range of stakeholder relationships for diversified funding to balance priorities in a way that accomplishes the overall goals of the agency.
Cultivate relationships with Regional Board Leadership to support C-Suite and Regional Chair direction. 
Support the Regional Board of Directors to lead, fundraise, and contribute to the overall success of the organization.
Positively influence partners, local media, and public policies to generate volunteers, donors, and other resources.  
Supports the successful financial operations of the agency. This includes: 

Regular monitoring of agency financial health, oversight of agency revenue and expenses, participation in the budgeting process, and assistance with other duties as assigned.

Expanding and Maintaining Partnerships
Maintain and strengthen the network of strategic partnerships and alliances that support the agency’s key priorities including youth development, volunteerism, poverty, workforce development, and social emotional health. 
Collaborate with COO and VP of Impact and Research to design and execute on actionable funded programs.
Build relationships with local and state legislators, to advance BBBSOCIE’s mission and goals.  
Audit and evaluate current district, city, municipality, and county relationships to increase and strengthen alliances.
Steward and engagement plans with the following Riverside and San Bernardino partners:

Districts/Office of Ed/LEA 
Police/Sheriff/Probation
Cities/City Councils
County 
State Assembly and Senators

Develop strategic government campaigns and activities for stakeholder involvement.
Support and represent the agency alongside Big Brothers Big Sisters Association of California led advocacy efforts.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS: 
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree. 
An understanding of charitable giving legal guidelines, specifically as it relates to fundraising events.
The flexibility to work early mornings, late evenings, and occasional weekends due to the nature of our events.
Excellent relationship management and interpersonal skills:
The ability to work effectively with donors, volunteers, and staff; display superior judgment and diplomatic skills; excellent verbal and written communications skills.
Proven strong negotiating skills.
Enthusiasm, commitment to excellence, self-motivation, a professional demeanor, is highly organized and detail oriented.
A collaborative, team-oriented attitude.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project), internet research and strong knowledge of social media.
Experience working with databases.
